King Cemetery (Russell Cemetery)
Sumrall, Lamar County, Mississippi

Lat: 31° 22' 09"N, Lon: 89° 35' 47"W

Contributed by D. Christopher Watts, Jul 07, 2006 [cwatts@cblink.com]. Total records = 17.

From Sumrall MS drive west on Hwy 42 for about a mile, then south onto Hwy 44 and continue for about a mile, turning left or east onto Press Russell Rd., turn right onto N Bryant Rd. and right onto the next right, which should take you to the King Cemetery.

This cemetery is inactive at the present time. It apparently was established as a small family cemetery in 1873 by the King family. It is now located on private land owned by Mr. Talmus Russell of Lamar County, who despite his age, maintains the cemetery.

It is known that there are several unmarked graves in the cemetery, some marked by stacks of bricks and indigenous stones. This cemetery sustained a good bit of damage from Hurricane Katrina but is now almost nearly cleared, There are three graves that are completely bricked over. Family folklore claims that a fever epidemic claimed these victims, and they were subsequently bricked over to keep the fever interred with the bodies.

Dr Jani Purvis and I visited and compiled this cemetery on Jul 07, 2006.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
