Lee's Summit Historical Cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Lee's Summit.

Cemetery History

The cemetery dates back to 1865 when William B. Howard donated two acres of land to the Town of Strother for use as a public cemetery. At that time, there were only family cemeteries dotting the countryside, and no place to bury unclaimed bodies.

Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery also contains the remains of many Quantrills Raiders and Civil War veterans. There is also a “Potters Field” which contains the remains of those who could not afford to purchase a family lot. Many of the influenza victims of 1918 are buried in this section of the cemetery. There is also a section for infants. Many slaves are also buried in this area.

Today, the cemetery measure 20 acres in size and is capable of holding as many as 20,000 graves.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
