Huron Township Cemetery
New Boston, Wayne County, Michigan

Lat: 42° 07' 36"N, Lon: 83° 21' 51"W

Contributed by Connie Carpenter, Mar 07, 2004 [meandsasha3133@aol.com]. Total records = 128.

Depart New Boston on Huron River Dr (south) 0.3 mi, continue (south) on Waltz Rd 3.3 mi Turn Left (east) onto Willow Rd 1.7 mi. Arrive Willow Metropark-South entrance. Once inside the park go to the Chestnut Indian Ridge Picnic Area. You will see a sign for the cemetery. Park at Indian Ridge Parking area and walk a short distance (about 1/10th of a mile) to the cemetery.

I cannot find a listing for Huron Township Cemetery on the register of Michigan cemeteries nor is it listed as a part of the park. By looking at it's location, though, I believe that it is the same cemetery known as "Huron" or "Fay and Smith" cemetery.

There is not much information about the cemetery. There is a $4.00 daily fee to enter the park. Once inside there is only a small brown marker to tell where the cemetery is located. You must take a short footpath approximately one tenth of a mile from a parking lot at the Indian Ridge Picnic Area to reach the cemetery.

The grass is kept neatly trimmed by the Park Rangers, however the cemetery itself is in bad shape. There are many headstones either missing or unreadable. Only a handful of people have been buried in this cemetery within the last 50 years. The latest interment date I could find was 1978. There are two Civil War graves.

This is a complete list of all readable stones. There were probably about 30 unreadable or broken stones. I recorded this transcript on Feb 28, 2004.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
