To reach the cemetery, travel south, off Miller Road, onto Durand Road for 3 miles, through the village of Durand, turn right onto Prior Road. The cemetery is located on the south side of the road, about .2 mile west of Durand Road.
The land was originally deeded as a cemetery in 1856. It is a very well-maintained cemetery, and is under the management of the Vernon Township board. Special thanks to Charlotte Clarke, township clerk, for her help in this transcription. It is sometimes called South Vernon Cemetery.
Standard genealogical resources were used to search incomplete information. Special thanks for the Surname Files located at the Owosso District Library and the Shiawassee County Genealogical Society collection of obituaries. Some of the included names, without dates, are found on previous cemetery transcriptions as unmarked graves, other lists of unmarked graves circulate in the area, but most of those names cannot be found in any database in the county, so have not been included. If readers know of names not on this list, and those names may have unmarked graves in Lovejoy, please contact me.
On the west front side of the cemetery, there is a large monument which reads: "In memory of the unknown dead who lost their lives in the railroad wreck of the great Wallace Shows, Aug 06, 1903." Small markers surround the monument with names of E. J., Joe, George, John, Allen, and Thomas, unclaimed bodies from the wreck buried here.
A basis for this transcription were two earlier transcriptions; 1960s completed by the late Frances Hazelton, and 1982 completed by Donna Trew Bame. I walked the cemetery on Jun 17, 2010 to verify and update the burials.
