Hessel Michigan is located in Mackinac County in the Upper Peninsula on the shore of Lake Huron. The entrance to the cemetery is adjacent to the parking lot of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church located at 261 South Island View Road. The church is on the corner of Island View & Hessel Point Roads. From this intersection the cemetery is .1 mile going north on the east side of the road.

The Old Mission Cemetery is a historical burial ground for many Sault Ste Marie Chippewa Indian Tribal members and their families. The historic cemetery is maintained by the Native American Society for Historic Preservation (NASHP). The existing cemetery is near capacity, and the NASHP has decided to expand it to allow future burials. Donations to the expansion project can be made by sending them to the NASHP, Paul Yarnell Chairman, 27671 S. Reynolds Road, Stalwart, Michigan 49736.

There are 134 known graves, 90 are marked by a large white wooden cross without identification. One grave is marked with a wooden structure known as a "spirit house". If you know of someone buried in this cemetery please contact me and we will include their name in the listing below.

My husband and I walked and read this transcription of all existing and legible stones & markers, which we completed on Jul 29, 2008.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
