Whitmore Family (Dern Farm) Cemetery
Frederick County, Maryland

Lat: 39°39.30N, Lon: 077°17.20W

Contributed by James Whitmer, Feb 23, 2001 [jowhitmer@aol.com]. Total records = 6.

This abandoned cemetery, known as the Dern Farm Cemetery, is in what was once Toms Creek Hundred. It is south of Toms Creek Cemetery, which is southeast of Emmittsburg. In reality, Toms Creek Cemetery, itself, consists of two cemeteries. These graves are the earliest in the locality.
"To get to the Dern farm, go south on the Sixes Road, from the Toms Creek Church. Turn to the right and follow a lane to the residence. Not far from the Dern residence is a lane. Follow this, then cross a fence, and the stones will be seen among clumps of trees and brush, surrounded by a woven wire fence. All the stones were carefully examined, and data copied on Sep 16, 1956, by H.C. Nycum, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Norman Niccum, Tecumseh, Kansas, recorded in National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 52, 1964."

Although the remains of the cemetery are still located on the farm in Feb 2001, the gravestones have been moved to the Mountain View Cemetery, Emmitsburg, Maryland. As I understand, the reason for moving the gravestones was that Frederick County had plans to flood the area for a large reservoir but it was never constructed.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
