Hawbottom Johnson Family Cemetery
Frederick County, Maryland

Contributed by Edie Hawbottom, Sep 14, 2000 [hawbottom1@aol.com]. Total records = 35.

This family cemetery is located on a small hill just off of Hawbottom Road (the south side of U.S. 40) in Frederick County, MD. This compiler has been actively maintaining this cemetery since 1994. Because it was bulldozed in 1988, some stones are missing and broken.

The list is comprised of personal observation by the contributor, Names in Stone by Holdcraft (1966), and various church records. The older stones have very ornate carvings very much like New England stones, rising suns, double coffins, braiding, etc.

There are several fieldstone markers with no inscriptions. One small stone found was a piece of slate with "B.F."crudely etched on it. This may be a slave stone. Martha Johnson (ca 1751, d. 1849) is a daughter of Thomas and Mary Rogers Johnson and never married and is most likely buried there as well.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
