History

Newton Cemetery was organized in 1855 under the Newton Cemetery Association, to be designed under the garden-style design popular in the mid-1800's. At a time when the City of Newton had no public parks, the cemetery became a destination for residents to enjoy the tranquil, picturesque scenery. Newton Cemetery eventually went on to become an award-winning horticultural site, and most recently was awarded Level II arboretum status. The cemetery sold its first plots on September 1, 1856, and was consecrated on June 10, 1857.

Newton Cemetery started out as 30 acres in size. Today it covers 100 acres.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
