Benningfield Chapel Cemetery
LaRue County, Kentucky

Lat: 37°26'37"N, Lon: 85°41'18"W

This listing was contributed by Edward Benningfield [knobcreekboy@mindspring.com].  Total records = 109.

Copied in Summer 1998

(Magnolia map, Section 19-L-46 Carter coordinates) The cemetery is located between Magnolia and Mt. Sherman on highway 1906.

The cemetery dates back to about 1870 and is in good condition. The Church records for the Chapel burned years ago, but the Chapel dates back to at least the 1860's. I believe Daniel Benningfield or a family member was instrumental in starting the Church, thus the name Benningfield was given. Daniel Benningfield's youngest son, Daniel Taylor Benningfield, married a daughter of Hensly Read. Two Civil War soldiers are believed by the author to be buried here, but neither one has a tombstone. David Elkin Jr. is believed buried here because this is probably the closest cemetery to his home, his wife was a Benningfield, the Hodgenville newspaper reported that a "Daniel Elkin" died and is buried here on the same date as David died, and his son James is known to be here. In the early 1930's, the WPA made a report on veteran graves and they list a John Walters for this cemetery.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
