Simerwell Cemetery
Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas

Lat: 38° 55' 06"N, Lon: 95° 44' 58"W
Williamsport Twp, Sec 16

Contributed by Doug McHatton, Jun 13, 2005, last edited May 17, 2007 [ddmchatton@sbcglobal.net]. Total records = 119.

From Topeka, go South on SW Wanamaker Road to SW 85th Street, then East on SW 85th Street approximately 1/2 mile, turn North on the unimproved lane that parallells the small creek, The cemetery is approximately 1/4 mile north of SW 85th Street.

Simerwell Cemetery started as the Simerwell Family Cemetery and is the final resting place of Elizabeth F (Simerwell) Carter, the first white female child born in Kansas. She was the daughter of Robert & Fanny (Goodrich) Simerwell, early Baptist Missionaries to the Indians.

In recent years it has been enlarged and is opened to others for burial. It is very well maintained. I did not notice any unmarked graves, but there were one or two stones that were completely unreadable.

This is a complete transcription of all existing and legible tombstones within the cemetery. I completed this transcription on Jun 13, 2005.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
