Shawnee Methodist Mission Cemetery
Johnson County, Kansas

3201 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Fairway KS

Lat: 39° 02' 00"N, Lon: 94° 37' 20"W
T49N R?E Sec 3

Contributed by Linda Lewis, Jun 23, 2005 [webmaster@cottonhills.com]. Total records = 22.

I35 south from Kansas City, MO to the Mission Rd exit, follow Mission Rd south to Shawnee Mission Parkway, turn left on Shawnee Mission Parkway and travel approximately two blocks. The cemetery is located on the south side street.

This historical cemetery is owned and maintained by the Kansas Historical Society as part of the Shawnee Indian Mission site, and is located a few blocks from the Mission buildings in what is now a suburban housing division on Shawnee Mission Parkway, a main artery to Kansas City. It has been owned by the Kansas Historical Society since 1927, and was designated a National Historical Site in 1968.

This cemetery contains the remains of Rev. Thomas Johnson, who this county is named for. With him is his wife, his brother Rev. William Johnson, and several members of his family.

The Kansas Historical Society does a good job maintaining this site, but there is a lot of old damage. All graves have headstones, but many of the initialed footstones are broken. Many of the small child headstones are very difficult to read and feeling and rubbing techniques are helpful.

This cemetery was transcribed and photographed from the gravestones and monuments in May of 2005. Photos available upon request. A map of the burial site can be seen here.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
