Shawnee Indian Cemetery
Shawnee, Johnson County, Kansas

10905 59th Terrace, Shawnee KS

Lat: 39° 01' 16"N, Lon: 94° 42' 54"W

Contributed by Maureen Reed, Aug 10, 2005 [webmaster@cottonhills.com]. Total records = 21.

From Kansas City MO, take I-35 S to Shawnee Mission Parkway. Take Shawnee Mission Parkway west to Nieman Rd. Turn north on Nieman Rd to 59th Terrace. There is a Kansas Historical Marker sign just before 59th Terrace on Nieman Rd. Turn right and continue 2 blocks. Street dead-ends at the cemetery.

The Johnson County Museum indicated the land is owned by the Kansas State Historical Society. The lawn and grounds are well maintained.

The stones are limestone and extremely eroded, and many are obliterated. Many are broken, and there is evidence of many settings for stones that are missing. Some graves are marked only by rocks.

It is obvious from the slight mounds of ground that there are more graves here than there are markers. Personally, I find this to be a very unfortunate situation.

I have transcribed all existing markers or stone from my first visit to this cemetery in Jul 17, 2000 and again on Jul 30, 2005.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
