To reach this cemetery, go east out of Geneseo on Highway #4 to 21st Road. Turn north and continue for approximately 6 miles. It is on the west side of the road between Ave R and Ave S.

Thompson Creek was the first settlement in Ellsworth County, Kansas. The cemetery was established about 1864. As years passed some people left, never to return and some stayed on. The cemetery fell into neglect for many years.

In 1938 Mrs. J. J. Smith (Margaret Davis), a descendent from the early settlers erected a monument to honor "courageous men and women who braved the danger of the new west in order to find homes for their families". Over 40 persons are mentioned on the monument. Most of them are babies and young mothers.

The cemetery is now well taken care of by the Empire Township.

I have gleaned much of this cemetery information from "History of Scates Cemetery" by Jim Grey. I completed this transcription on Sep 20, 2010.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
