Union Pacific Railroad Cemetery
Victoria, Ellis County, Kansas

Lat: 38° 50' 50"N, Lon: 99° 08' 59"W

Contributed by Janice Pfannenstiel, Dec 05, 2003 [janpfe_ks@hotmail.com]. Total records = 6.

Located on SW edge of Victoria, KS, where Cathedral Avenue and Hwy 40 meet.

A monument erected by the Union Pacific Railroad Co. reads as follows:

"This Stone Marks the Burial place of Six track laborers who were in the employ of the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division and, while on duty, about one mile west of here were massacred by a band of Cheyenne Indians Oct. 1867" Erected by the Union Pacific Railroad Co.

According to other records, this happened on Aug 01, 1867. A seventh (William Gould of Illinios) was buried at Fort Hays. He was taken there for medical help, but did not live.

I walked and read this cemetery on Oct 26, 2003.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
