Total records = 550.
To reach the cemetery, as you drive south from Sandpoint, on US
Hwy 95, a few miles south of Sagle turn west, or right, onto Dufort
Rd. Then it will be another 9mi or so. It is hard to see, but on
your right there will be a sign, which takes you onto another smaller
dirt road into the cemetery.
Here we have a cemetery situated in the forest. I am told it
is managed by a board, under the association. Burial sites are
purchased and cared for by their owners or families.
This cemetery started as a family cemetery in 1893, owned by
the Markham family, who donated the land. It was called the LaClede
Cemetery when it began to be used by the community, the town of
LaClede being across the river from the cemetery. From about 1900
to 1920 it was often referred to as Riverside Cemetery.
The earliest dates appear to be in the early 1900s judging from
the markers. The present name is and Indian word, meaning "deep
water crossing" possibly to do with the location.
Many of the markers are hidden under growth. There were also
many with just one name on them, which I did not include. I took
a photo, but they are not identifiable in many cases. I am still
trying to find more of the old records.
I was unable to get a photo of all the burials. It was either
because the stone was not legible or I could not find a marker
for it. An asterisk * has been placed after those which I have
no photo, and found a previous record of, or a later addition
since I walked the cemetery.
I visited and read this cemetery Aug 19, 2002, using a digital
camera, and have photos of most stones and markers.
