The Lakeview Cemetery is located at the south end of Division Street off Highway 2, next to Pend Oreille Lake.

Lakeview Cemetery was platted in October 1903. After it was established the original cemetery in Sandpoint, Humbird Cemetery, was moved from it's location on a strip of land along the Northern Pacific Railroad, donated to Sandpoint by Mr. Ferguson.

After the Humbird Lumber Company purchased the property, the graves were moved to the new site of the Lakeview Cemetery. The oldest known burial is 1885 and was one of the relocated graves. This list from the transcriptions of the tombstones was completed October 2000.

This list was checked with a list completed by the Shanes and with the funeral home records. There were several unreadable stones, several unmarked graves, and several old upright stones that were knocked over and too heavy to lift to see what they say.

A board of volunteers makes up the Lakeview Cemetery Committee. Several members on this committee are in the process of probing some of the areas in an attempt to locate markers that have since been buried by sod and weeds. The volunteers also keep care of the maintenance of this cemetery.

Tombstone transcriptions were completed by Mary and Nellie Garrison during August 2000. Information was also gathered from obituaries and death notifications in the local newspapers furnished by the Bonner County Historical Museum.

Names marked by an asterisk are the original burials in the old Sandpoint (Humbird) Cemetery. ** The grave of John George Hawkins is empty. He is actually buried at the State Hospital located in Blackfoot, ID.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
