Woodland Cemetery is owned and operated by the Oak Lawn Cemetery Assocation.

Oak Lawn Cemetery was formed in 1864 when several prominent men and business men in Fairfield agreed to create a cemetery designed to attract tourists. They purchased 12 acres for $1,200.00 at the present day site. On December 29, 1865 the Oak Lawn Cemetery Association was formed.

Of the first 170 burials that occurred in the cemetery's first few years were reinterments from other cemeteries. More than half came from West Burying Ground, while others came from Greenfield Burying Ground, and Mountain Grove Cemetery. Most of the dead lived in Southport, Fairfield, and New York City.

Today, Oak Lawn Cemetery encompasses 100 acres as a non-sectarian cemetery.
