Cemetery History

Originally established in 1859, land for this cemetery wasn't officially deeded to the Trustees of the Oroville Jewish Cemetery un April 11, 1871 by Andrew Gardella, "for use and benefit of the Hebrews or Jewish of said Town". The first recorded burial was on February 16, 1862.

It is approximately 2.6 acres, of which 1 acre is developed. It's said there are only about 130 interred. The Jewish Cemetery is designated as historical cemetery.

Historical Plaque That Reads...

"Thousands of Jewish emigrants escaping religious persecution and economic oppression in Germany and Eastern Europe joined the Gold Rush to California. They brought with them a strong work ethic and religious conviction. These settlers were among Oroville's earliest workers, merchants, and civic leaders.

According to their religious custom, Jewish persons are buried in their own cemetery. This cemetery was established April 5, 1859."

This plaque is donated by Congregation Beth Israel, Chico, CA in memory of these original Jewish settlers.

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
