Directions from I-65. At I-65 Exit 8/US-45, turn left (North-West) onto US-45 [SR-17] and travel 1.6 miles. Turn right (East) onto Branch Ave. and travel .4 miles. Bear right onto W. Main St., and turn right into cemetery gate for the main section, for the Therrell section turn left into that cemetery gate.

This is a community cemetery cared for by a board of directors. Donald Kidd has the responsibility of caring for and managing the cemetery.

Some question has arisen over the Therrell Annex. This is simply another section of the Whistler Cemetery, which was named after Mark Dodd Therrell Sr., who donated the land. It is across the road from the main section of the cemetery, but is managed by the same board. (Editor notes, per phone conversation with Donald Kidd)

The main section of the cemetery is surrounded by a wire & post fence with white concrete column gate posts, the gate is no longer standing. The fence is falling down in some sections toward the rear. Across the road the Therrell Annex is surrounded by a chain link fence with white concrete column gate posts.

Whistler cemetery is not a perpetual care site and is maintained by surviving loved ones of those interred, plus some care by the board. There are many sinking and broken slabs and vaults.

This listing is complete as of Jun 12, 2001, after I surveyed the cemetery and recorded these tombstones, starting in April of 2001. There are over 2,000 marked graves in addition to numerous unmarked slabs for adults. This cemetery is still in use.

I have taken the liberty of adding information in () parenthesis of which I have personal knowledge from my geneology research, {}brackets information is from Mobile Probate Court Marriage Records,or |[]| double square brackets information is from the Mobile Register Obituary Column, [] square brackets information is from Higgins or Roache/McKay Funeral Home Records.

Those individuals entered with * after their entry, do not have a headstone. That individual's information was taken from the funeral home records, or a family member. Any information in this listing that is not on the tombstone is always found in parenthesis, brackets, double square brackets or square brackets. bur. TA = buried in Thurrell Annex.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
