McElwain Cemetery Records
Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama

4445 Montevallo Road South
Birmingham, Alabama, 35213

Lat: 33° 31' 07"N, Lon: 86° 43' 47"W
T17S R2W Section 27/34

Contributed by Carl W. Dykes, Nov 24, 2007 [cwdykes@charter.net]. Total records = 327.

The cemetery and church are easily accessible from Montevallo Road. The cemetery is located in the rear of McElwain Kindergarten School and the old Sanctuary of the McElwain Baptist Church. The two buildings are separated by Gladstone Avenue. The new McElwain Baptist Church Sanctuary is located on the opposite side of Montevallo Road.

This main cemetery is bordered by McElwain Kindergarten School on the East, McElwain Kindergarten School recreation field on the North, single family homes on the West and Gladstone Avenue on the South. It is fenced on three sides with only the Gladstone Avenue side open. The small section directly behind the church is fenced.

McElwain Cemetery was established in 1875. It is difficult to determine the oldest grave because there has been some degradation due to the elements and to vandalism. This cemetery is still in use and appears to be well maintained by the church.

This transcription was conducted on Nov 12, 2007. It is a complete listing of the readable stones in the cemetery when I visited. There are numerous stones that are unreadable for various reasons.

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    Clear Digital Media, Inc.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
