This cemetery is located on Ruffner Road also known as County Road 147 about one and a half miles east of U. S. Highway 11, otherwise known as Gadsden Highway or 1st Avenue North in Birmingham. It may also be accessed from U.S. Highway 78, otherwise known as Crestwood Boulavard in the City of Irondale. Take 16th Street north from Irondale for about one half mile and then turn right onto Ruffner Road. The cemetery is in a remote area set back from Ruffner road about a hundred yards. It is bordered by the Ernest Norris Yards of the Norfolk Southern Railroad to the north and wooded areas on the east and west.

This cemetery is about 150 years old but it is difficult to say with any certainty who was buried here first. I found one broken stone which contained the dates of Jan 29, 1805 to Mar 22, 1860. Unfortunately, the name portion of that stone was missing. It is an active cemetery.

This cemetery has been badly vandalized. I would estimate that one quarter of the stones in this cemetery are so damaged that the information contained on them has been lost forever. The vandals not only broke the tops from the stones, they carried them away from the cemetery. Almost all of the large stones have been dislodged from their respective foundations. Vandals have had Ghost sighting parties at the cemetery for years leaving behind destruction and garbage. There are video's of these parties on the internet. In addition, the surrounding wooded areas have been used as a dump.

I completed transcribing this cemetery on Feb 15, 2007. It is a complete listing of all existing and legible stones in the cemetery.

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    Clear Digital Media, Inc.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
