The New Bethel Cemetery is located in the Pelham Range area along the boundary between Fort McClellan and Anniston Army Depot in Calhoun County just north of Anniston, Alabama. The New Bethel Baptist Church used to be next to the cemetery, but it has been gone for many years. There is a fence line separating Fort McClellan and the Anniston Army Depot. The New Bethel Cemetery is located in the middle of that fence line. In fact, the fence splits when it gets to the cemetery, goes around both sides of it, and then merges when it gets around the cemetery.

Going from Anniston to Jacksonville on the Jacksonville Highway, turn left onto Pelham Road. Proceed until you get to Gate 5. From Highway 431, enter through Gate 5. Go down until you see the sign "Gate 14". Take a left. It is easy to get lost going to the cemetery. Much of it was on a dirt road-it was smooth so any car could make it without difficulty.

Visiting the cemetery is a bit more difficult than visiting most cemeteries. To get to it, you must drive through what used to be the firing range area that was controlled by Fort McClellan's Range Control (Fort McClellan is now closed. I do not know if Anniston Army Depot now controls the old range). You used to have to call Range Control (205-238-3344), located in Building 3280, Fort McClellan, one or two days prior to the day you wanted to visit the cemetery. When Range Control gave you permission to enter the range, you had to ask for directions to the cemetery. I was able to pick up a map to the cemetery from Range Control, but no longer have it. (To visit Range Control, enter Fort McClellan through the Summerall Gate. Follow the signs and turn left by the Chapel).

I do not know who maintains the cemetery, but it may be like many small onesrelatives come out once or twice a tear and cut the grass and weeds. The earliest burial was around 1870.

The area used to be primarily farmland. Fort McClellan was not established until 1912 (officially closed around 1999). The other Army installation, the Anniston Army Depot, began as a storage depot 1942 and is still a viable depot. I must assume that the Federal Government purchased the land for two installations (or perhaps some of it was owned by the Federal Government and was simply unused at the time). Since the Army installations swallowed up the church over time, I must assume that was why the church was abandoned.

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    Clear Digital Media, Inc.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
