He married Elizabeth Kennedy Watts on January 16, 1911 at Cristobal, Canal Zone and they lived in Balboa, Canal Zone. On August 11, 1913, he received the Roosevelt Medal for his work as a steam engineer for the Panama Canal Company. He died on January 9, 1946 from a coronary occlusion and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery near his wife, Elizabeth Kennedy Watts.

Mr. Zachary stayed in Panama where he was employed by the Panama Canal Company as a policeman until retirement on July 31, 1933 and remained in Panama where he died on March 15, 1938, and buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery. reinterred at the Corozal American Cemetery in 1979. He was the recipient of the Roosevelt Medal with One bar.
