He retired from the Panama Canal Company and continued to live in the Canal Zone. In 1969, he became ill and was evacuated to St. Petersburg, Florida for medical treatment. On January 15, 1969 he died at 4520 1 Avenue South, Saint Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida. He was cremated and his ashes were initially lost by the funeral home. His ashes were finally recovered and he was buried on May 3, 2012 at the Corozal American Cemetery.
