Malahide Castle was built by the Talbot Family, an English family, as far back as 1175. The family held the title Earls of Shrewsbury, whom had arrived in England during the Norman invasion with William the Conqueror.

The cemetery, also known as, "Abbey Graveyard", contains remains of the Talbot family, their associates, and residents of Malahide. During the 1870's the then Lord Talbot of Malahide petitioned the Local Goverment Board to close the graveyard from further burials, citing foul odors and bones protruding from the ground. Other experts disagreed with Talbot's claims. Peter Radcliffe, who worked for Talbot, and whose wife Anne was already buried in the cemetery, fought the petition, hoping that he would one day be buried there with her. Court battles ensued, and the grounds were closed and reopened, then closed again. Finally on January 1, 1877, the Board ordered the graveyard reopened, limiting it to eight burials per year.

Today, the cemetery remains closed to new burials.

No burial records are known to exist, aside from funeral notices and obituaries in archived newspapers. There are perhaps thousands of people buried at Malahide Castle over the centuries. Only a handful of tombstones remain.

This is not a complete listing of burials in this graveyard. The records below were provided by contributors to Interment.net.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
