Spring Valley Cemetery
Hinchcliffe, Kamsack Region, Saskatchewan

Hinchcliffe, Saskatchewan
SE10-36-4-W2

Contributed by Evangeline Mostowchuk, Aug 03, 2003, last edited Apr 14, 2008 [van345@email.com]. Total records = 120.

From Junction 9&49 just east of Preeceville, head north to Hinchcliffe corner, turn right (east) off Highway 9 at Danbury sign (There's a graveyard on the left), onto grid road. Go 5 miles east. Turn left (north) onto grid road. Go 1.3 miles north, turn right (east) onto a gravelled, grass-centred road. Follow the road east and curve north along a creek right into the cemetery. (Note: If you pass a farmyard on the left with a white house, you've gone too far!)

The Ukrainian settlers had a Russian Orthodox Church built 8 miles north of Sturgis, NW22-35-4-W2, on the McClure property across from the John Prekaski farm. The church name was changed to St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Around 1907, disagreements resulted in one church being built by Lady Lake and the above one being moved to Spring Valley Cemetery at SE10-36-4-W2.

The land for the cemetery was donated by John Lesanko to the community. The cemetery is out in the country, not in a city, so all the land around it is farmland.

The church is Holy Ascension Russian Greek Orthodox Church at Spring Valley where this cemetery is. Now the church roof has fallen in, and has not been repaired. The cemetery is still in use, and is owned and maintained by the community.

In mid Jul, 2003, I visited this cemetery. Some of the names are transliterated, as they were in Ukrainian.
