Muchowko Cemetery (Holick Cemetery)
Hinchcliffe, Kamsack Region, Saskatchewan

Hinchcliffe, Saskatchewan

Contributed by Evangeline Mostowchuk, Aug 06, 2003, updated Mar 28, 2004 [van345@email.com]Total records = 46.

Turn north at Junction 9&49 just east of Preeceville, Saskatchewan. Go north on Highway #9 to Hinchcliffe corner. On the west side is a cemetery. Turn east here, there is a sign that says 'Danbury'. Go east on this grid road, #753, for 7 1/2 miles. The cemetery is on the north side of the road.

This is a Muchowko Ruthenian Greek Catholic Cemetery. It also is known as Holick Cemetery by some. The cemetery was abandoned from 1960 to 1988. It was totally overgrown with trees! Volunteers cleared the trees, landscaped the grave sites, fenced and cut grass. Two years ago it was gravelled, the soil sterilized to prevent weeds, much grass and brush cutting, making it possible to be used today. The latest person to be buried in this cemetery is Edward Gogal, summer 2003.

Peter Melnyk made most of the crosses in the cemetery. His style of using 1/2 Engish, 1/2 Ukrainian is very difficult to decipher.

I do not know when it was established but the first person buried in it was Yusaf Strykowski (1869-1915). At that time Ilko and Molly (Hydamaka) Fincaryk owned the land the cemetery is on. I am assuming that the 2 acres plot was donated. It is kept up by the community, easily accessible as it is along a major grid road. The graveyard is graveled to keep weeds to a minimum. The land surrounding the cemetery is currently farmed by Brian Burym.

In mid Jul, 2003, I visited this cemetery, taking a visual record. This represents all the inscriptions on the headstones in the Muchowko Cemetery. Some of the birth and death dates I gleaned from a local history book.
