Stone School House Cemetery
Melbourne, Richmond County, Quebec

Contributed by Joan Cruickshank, Oct 28, 2006, last edited Oct 26, 2007 . Total records = 57.

This cemetery is located on Route 143 between Melbourne, Quebec and Ulverton, Quebec.

The stone school, one of the oldest buildings in the area, is a familiar landmark along highway 143. It dates back to about 1819, and was not only used as a school, but also a social center and a church, which probably explains why it is surrounded by a cemetery. Near the entrance of the school is a plaque bearing family names such as Bartlett, Gallup, Wales, Pierce, and Wilson, a few of the pioneers resting here who helped to build the school house.

Due to age, some of the stones were either partially or completely illegible, and there are unmarked graves. The cemetery records show a few of the burials with no markers, so I have included them in my listing, and have identified them with an asterisk (*), and I have also included a few missing dates in brackets.

The cemetery is maintained by the Melbourne United Church Cemetery Committee, and was in good order when I visited it this fall.

I walked the cemetery in October, 2006, and transcribed from the stones to the best of my ability.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
