Gilman Cemetery (Sargent Cemetery) (Campground Cemetery)
Mansonville, Brome County, Quebec

Contributed by Joan Cruickshank, Oct 18, 2007, last edited Oct 24, 2007 . Total records = 49.

From the Eastern Townships Autoroute 10, take the exit for Eastman, Quebec, and follow Route 245 South for about 16 km. until you reach the intersection at Route 243. Follow Route 243 South, to Mansonville, Quebec. Continue on Route 243 South until you see Chemin de la Vallee- Missisquoi (Route 105). Take Chemin de la Vallee-Missisquoi in the direction of Dunkin, Quebec, and the cemetery is amongst some dense woods, on the left side of the road, just before the campground.

Named after Dr. William Gilman, and his father, Thomas Gilman, who came to the area in 1800, this cemetery was also known as the Sargent Cemetery, or the Campground Cemetery. For whatever reasons, the cemetery was abandoned many years ago, and the headstones that remain are scattered amongst the woods, and are in very poor condition.

Through reading what I could of the stones when I visited this cemetery in the summer of 2007, and with some research I did through the library in Mansonville, I was able to compile a listing of burials for this cemetery. It was noted in their files, that the Gilman headstones were all removed and placed in the Protestant cemetery in Mansonville, Quebec.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
