Loyalist Burying Ground
Saint Andrews by the Sea, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada

Contributed by Joan Cruickshank, Sep 12, 2007, last edited Sep 14, 2007 . Total records = 220.

This picturesque, and very old cemetery, takes up the block between Prince of Wales, King, and Carleton Streets, and the Vincent Massey School, in the town of Saint Andrews by-the-Sea, New Brunswick.

Surrounded by an iron fence, it is the resting place of many of the founding Loyalists who came to Saint Andrews by-the-Sea in the 1700's. The land was given to the Church of England in 1794, and the cemetery was open to all denominations until other churches and their graveyards were established. In 1867, a law forbade burials in town, so the cemetery was no longer in use.

Over time some of the stones were broken, or even removed. In 1905 the wrought iron fence that surrounds it today, was installed, but the cemetery remained neglected until 1981 when the Saint Andrews Civic Trust cleaned it up, and repaired the stones. Presently, the cemetery is maintained by the local Anglican Church.

The stones are very old and weathered, and most are not legible, so I found burial records for this cemetery in the archives in Saint Andrews by-the-Sea, and my listing is strictly taken from those records. However, there are burials with no stones for which the archives have no records.

I walked this cemetery in August, 2007, and transcribed from the stones to the best of my ability.

- Joan Cruickshank

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    Clear Digital Media, Inc.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
