Where to Find a List of Cemeteries

by SteveThursday, December 28, 2006

I received an e-mail from someone wanting to know where they can find a list of all active cemeteries for a given county.

Here was my response...
There really isn't anyone who keeps a log of these things. Not even funeral homes have such lists, because they only work within a localized area. There are companies that publish cemetery directories, but they only list the cemeteries who bury more than 30-50 bodies per year. Some websites list all cemteries, active and inactive, for a given county.

If you can't find anything satisfactory through a Google search, "Jones County Arkansas cemeteries", then you'll have to create a list of your own.

Steve
Here are a few books that offer some solutions:
If anyone knows of any comprehensive listings of cemeteries, click on "Post a Comment" below and mention it.

  • I recently went to a cementery near my work. Pinelawn National Cemetery in Pinelawn Long Island NY. I'm a freelance photographer and I love photography. I have always gone to many cemeteries and have just walked in and start to taking pictures. Pictures that for me are beautiful and sad, and simply great to look at. Art for the sake of art. That is one thing my life has always enjoyed, my photography Hobie. I remember that before 9-11 you could basically take your camera anywhere and take pictures without having anyone to bother you about it. The point of this comment is that I was told by I guess what seemed to me a cemetery worker, that I have to have "permission" to take photos at this cemetery. I told some of my workers and friends about it and I was quite amazed at their response. They said that they were quite impress that I even bothered and even amazed that I would find something nice in there. Besides being very silent and stress free. I found it to be an honor to have my self being told to leave such a place. Given the fact that I had been thrown out of even holy places (churches and temples). Have anyone out there ever had anything even remotely happen to them like this?

  • Hi I was recently out to a cemetery in long island ... long island national cemetery to visit my mother and grandmother... I had brought a disposable camera in with me and took 6 pictures since it was my first time being there... no one bothered me ... in fact a man who worked with the cemetery directed me to the grave... and I asked him if I was allowed to take pictures and he said yes.... that would be the day if they told me I couldn't.. cemeterys are considered holy burial ground.... I would have told the guy in that case they should ban pictures in church and at holy communions and then asked to see that specific rule or guidline banning me from doing so

  • I'm not so much trying to find a cemitary as trying to find out where a specific person was burried. My stepmother-to-be died of cancer in September 2001 and I'm trying to discover where she was burried so that I can put my dad's heart at ease. I'm not quite certain how to go about doing this and I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have

  • The McDavid Cemetery in Lincoln County, Mississippi is on family land belonging to decendents of my Grandfather, R.F. McDavid. My Grandmother is buried there.

There is a book put out by the DAR in Mississippi which lists all cemeteries in the State, along with the ones buried there. If anyone is interested, I can get the exact name.

  • I don't recommend findagrave. Their records aren't accurate and several efforts to correct information about my family were ignored.

Myself and a couple of other folks are currently in the process of photographing every headstone in Butler Co. If this is where you are looking, contact ksgenealogy@hotmail.com

  • Hi, my name is Rose Birdwell, President and Founder of Cemetery Surveys, Inc. We have cemeteries posted, complete with pictures of each stone and panoramas of each cemetery, mostly in the Southeast US, but we do have many other states listed, as more people volunteer to join our team. We have been doing this since 1999, we are all volunteers, and we are a not for profit and FREE website.
If you have transcriptions and/or pictures of cemeteries, you may send them to me at birdwellrose@yahoo.com, or you may volunteer to become an indexer on our site, both of these options would be very welcome.
Please stop by and take a look...www.cemeterysurveysinc.com
