Saint Mary Magdalene Churchyard
Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England
Church Walk, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire
Contributed by Shelley Clack, Apr 29, 2007 [sclack@tiscali.co.uk].
Total records = 272.
Saint Mary Magdalene Churchyard is located on Church Walk, Newark-on-Trent.
Originally burials were on land to the north of the church. The
churchyard was enlarged in the 1300s, late 1700s and in 1818.
During the 1600s victims of the plague outbreak were buried in
the area that borders Appletongate. The churchyard closed in 1856,
with the opening of the local cemetery.
The churchyard has been converted into a public garden, with
the gravestones relocated to the following positions:
Placed vertically around the edge of the garden – majority of
these stone are in very good condition and can still be read.
Laid horizontally to make a path around the edge of the garden
– due to being walked over, exposed to the elements and the encroachment
of moss, these stones are primarily unreadable.
Laid horizontally in the flower beds near the church – these stones
are primarily readable.
Laid horizontally to make a hard surface area around the church
– Most of these stones have worn away. Broken stones have been
used to fill gaps.
This may not be all of those buried in this cemetery but it is
a complete list of all existing and legible stones and markers
at this time. I found 279 unreadable stones. There are also many
missing stones. I completed this reading on Feb 11, 2007 by walking
the cemetery.
