From Rossland heading toward Trail the cemetery is just before you come
into Trail on Hwy 3B on the north side of the road, just past the Mountain
View Cemetery.
The Trail Cemetery was established with the city in the late 1800's
and was located in the Tadanac region on Aldridge Avenue. In 1957 it
was decided to relocate the cemetery. All interments were moved to their
current location, 8 kilometres north of Trail on Highway 3B. They chose
to use the lower section of Mountain View cemetery land for this. The
two cemeteries are across the road from each other. This is one of three
cemeteries owned and maintained by the city of Trail. Knights of Pythias
Cemetery is the third.
Each headstone is the same in the new area, with some having only a
surname and may or may not have a date, sometimes two dates. Some with
both surname and given name and no dates some with both names and both
dates. It appears they did not concern themselves with details or try
to keep families together and I found some in error on the new stones,
after I read the old stones. I have tried to make notes to denote this
when I caught it.
The old monuments which could be moved were saved and placed in several
rows in the back part of the new location. They are very close together,
each with no base, so to keep them standing there is gravel and other
debris over the bottom of the monuments, making it difficult to read
the inscription on some. They do seem to have them maintained well,
so as to preserve them. None of the bodies are buried in the area where
the old monuments are. The burials are all out in the main part of the
cemetery using the new flat stones to identify the gravesites. No new
burials take place, and no lots sold, in cemetery with a few exceptions
due to previously purchased plots or agreements.
I walked and read this cemetery on Jul 14, 2003, using my digital
camera. This includes all existing headstones. I have a photo
of all existing and legible stones and markers. When the record
says photo, that is a photo on the stone. If anyone sees an error,
do not hesitate to contact me about it. Information in parenthesis
is not on headstone. I am quite sure I do not have all of the
names of those buried here and suspect there could be errors.
